Reskinning gets sold with screenshots of five-figure monthly revenue and no mention of what it took to get there. The model below is closer to what a first product actually looks like.
The cost side
- Source code licence: a one-time cost, varying widely by product maturity
- Rebrand and customisation: typically the same order as the licence
- Developer accounts: $25 once for Google Play, $99 annually for Apple
- Initial user acquisition: the largest line, and the one people forget
The revenue side
Ad revenue is driven by three numbers: daily active users, sessions per user and effective CPM in your target geography. A CPM that looks fine in the United States can be six times lower in the markets where installs are cheap — which is exactly where your cheap installs come from.
Model both together or the spreadsheet lies to you.
Where first products usually fail
Not on the code. On the assumption that installs are free. Organic discovery for a reskinned app in a crowded category is close to zero without ASO work or paid acquisition, and neither is instant.
What we tell buyers
Treat the first product as tuition. Budget for acquisition from the start, expect to break even rather than profit, and judge the model on product two or three when you actually know your numbers.
